The Scribes, Comprehensive Writing Services brings together freelance writers, editors, print and internet designers to assist you with your nonfiction writing projects.
Jeanette Taylor, Scribes coordinator, has decades of experience as a museum curator, historian, writing instructor and speaker. She worked at the BC Archives for several years, for the Museum at Campbell River for several decades, and latterly was the executive director of the Campbell River Art Gallery. Jeanette currently teaches writing workshops and is a private writing coach. She has four books in print, including BC bestseller Tidal Passages. Her self-published guide Exploring Quadra Island, co-authored with Ian Douglas, sold over 3,000 copies and is now out of print.
Elise Velazquez, writer and editor, has a degree in Communications from the University of Victoria. She has copy-edited publications including the Victorian Review and works as a copy writer and editor in her current job for the federal government. Elise is also a freelance writer and regular contributor to Island Parent.
Margaret Horsfield, Scribes editor, is the author of five nonfiction books, including the award-winning Cougar Annie’s Garden and Voices from the Sound. Currently working on a history of Tofino, Margaret often turns to family histories and personal memoirs to gather vivid stories of people and place. Margaret was a radio journalist for BBC (England) and CBC (Canada) for fifteen years. She coached writing for radio and was a freelance journalist for many different newspapers and magazines. Her recent work as an editor includes two local histories and a guidebook.
Jocelyn Reekie, Scribes editor, has worked as a copywriter and journalist, and authored two YA novels and three picture books. Her historical novel Tess was a BC Bestseller and shortlisted for two major awards. Jocelyn is a graduate of the Banff Centre of the Arts Book Editing Program. She has co-edited and produced two anthologies: ShoreLines: Memoirs & Tales of the Discovery Islands, and Escape. Both projects enhanced her skill as an editor for writers working in an assortment of genres. Jocelyn delights in the process of helping writers achieve their potential. Erica Hargreaves, Scribes designer, is a graduate of the Emily Carr University of Art and Design, with a degree in Communication Design. From large scale billboards to small publications, Erica has worked on diverse print projects with varying budgets. She’s currently the graphic designer at the University of Northern British Columbia. Erica is passionate about design and will work with you to create a visually unique and professional publication. Ester Strijbos, Scribes graphic and website designer, studied at St. Lucas College in The Netherlands and immigrated to Canada in 2003. She works with WordPress, Drupal and Adobe Suite. She loves to create a positive online experience for your customers and can help you with all your online marketing needs. She creates attractive, user friendly, affordable and quick loading websites that communicate your message effectively.
